Nigel Robinson, Club Secretary & a Blue recipient for Shotokan Karate 1985/86:
“I have fond memories of my time with the Shotokan club, joining as a novice in 1983 and training through to graduation. EUSKC was quite technically-focused with an emphasis on kata. Our sensei was Jim Downie, who would often walk the brown and black belts through the more advanced forms. Sensei Jim was from the Tora Kai association and was one of the instructors that would come through from the west a couple of times a week to teach us. We looked up to him, yet he was a very personable individual. Years later, when I was driving through Port Glasgow and was waiting for the lights to change, there was Jim, tapping my door window for a chat and encouraging me to come along for a training session!”
“Our final year (1985/86) was quite successful. We hosted the Scottish Universities championships at the Pleasance and managed a decent crop of awards among the club. Membership was strong with many karateka progressing through the grades to ever greater things.”
Rasmus Moldstad Bakken, 2022/23 Club President:
“Edinburgh University Karate Club consists of the friendliest and most dedicated group of people. My favourite thing about the club is the kindness that you’re met with. Everyone is welcome and people just wants to have a good time, be that with a fun game at a social or in a full fight during practice.”
