Media Officer Newsletter - January Edition

Hello and welcome to the first Media Officer Newsletter of 2023!

I am Telfer Gray your Sports Union Media Officer.

Please read on below to discover some sporting media updates here at Edinburgh!

IM ALL Stars

Our yearly IM ALL Stars competition kicked off our proceedings for 2023.

The weather fell victim to our Hockey game, though we were greeted to five other matches featuring our squash, netball, football, basketball and rugby clubs.

Our livestreaming viewers were treated to an entertaining affair involving our IM and club basketball squads. Although the club works closely with the IM teams this didn't stop any competitive spirits. Held in Pleasance sports hall a crowd of up to 50 people witnessed the scoreline switching back and forth with the intensity of a BUCS Trophy Final. Congratulations go to our Intramural outfit which came out on top with 68-52 victory.

At Peffermill astroturf our EUAFC walked off to a convincing 6-2 win vs the ALL Stars, and on the grass EURFC won 29 – 17 vs IM.

The squash courts witnessed our Club team win 3 games to 2, and EUNC won 51-14 in the netball.

Semester 2 livestreams:

Our live-stream schedule is continuing in semester 2. Keep up to date with our Focus Fixtures on our Social Media to watch live or rewatch your match via our YouTube channel. Below is a list of the clubs we are featuring in the coming weeks.

1st February: Womens Basketball - A tight affair vs Durham culminating in a 80 - 71 loss at St Leonards Land.

8th February: Women’s Football vs University of St Andrews

15th February: Women’s Rugby vs University of Exeter

22nd February: Trophy Week (TBC)

Club Training Project:

The Media Team is launching a new Club Training Project this semester.

We are targeting clubs that students may know less information about or clubs that are lower on membership numbers, helping increase visibility to your sport and club within University.

What the project entails is a few media team volunteers would attend a normal club training session and film some footage from our video camera, plus a presenter interview style feature with each club answering 5 set questions about their club.  We would then create an Instagram reel and Highlight section, with the opportunity for a mini-YouTube video later in the semester focusing on your club. Adittionally we would provide the chance for some photography to be snapped up!

I have contacted clubs via email that I think would be good to cover, so please let me know if your club is interested!

Alternatively if your club believes they would benefit get in touch with me as well.

Future Video Projects

The team is keen to launch another video project which will be shown at Blues and Colours. Keep an eye out from me in the coming weeks asking for club members to participate in.

We are particularly keen to theme the video on historic Edinburgh city landmarks, for example Calton Hill, Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle etc. This project will likely only require a couple of club members to participate in.

Sports Ball filming video clips are currently being sent over to clubs Microsoft Teams channels – Please feel free to use for club or personal use.

Photography

Photographed any good sporting photos from fixtures and training?

Please send them over via email and we will happily share & credit on our Social Media channels.

You might even see your photo on our Instagram story Photography Poll competition.

Also a reminder that there is a Flickr account which has individual photo albums of clubs which are free to download at @UoE Sports Union

Upcoming Media Workshop

Calling all Media & Publicity Officers, you are invited to attend a Media Workshop held on Tuesday the 14th of February from 4 - 5pm.

We reccomend that current publicity officers or those who are wishing to run for future Publicity roles in their club or within the Sports Union attend this workshop.

It would be great to see as many people in attendance, helping us engage in conversations to receive feedback, as well as giving you the chance to learn from others.
