Media Officer Newsletter November Edition

Hello, it is Telfer here, your Sports Union Media Officer. Please take a look at all things sport media related here at Edinburgh!

Live – Streaming

It has been great to see our live – streaming service fully operational on a weekly basis. This has enabled fellow students to keep a close eye on our clubs as well as friends and family from abroad tuning in to BUCS Wednesday matches. A particular highlight to mention here at Edinburgh was our Hockey double header on the 9th of November where our men’s and woman’s 1’s both faced tough opposition from the University of Birmingham. Despite the two narrow defeats our audience were treated to plenty of skill and endeavour with both games going right to the wire.

A big Thank You is in order for both sets of commentators provided from the Hockey club who gave our 200 people watching informative and entertaining commentary. Please do keep up the shout outs from friends and family in our YouTube live – stream comments.

So far on our semester one schedule we have been treated to

  • Women’s Lacrosse vs Durham - 2 close admirable performances against two top Durham sides
  • Men’s Water Polo vs Manchester Met – A thrilling 9-9 draw!
  • Women’s Hockey vs Dundee – A 2-0 win for Edinburgh!
  • Men’s Football vs Aberdeen - A 3-2 win for Edinburgh!
  • Women’s Water Polo Edinburgh vs Newcastle – A fantastic 19-5 win!
  • Men & Women’s Hockey vs Birmingham - Two very exciting games with Birmingham coming on top 2-0 & 3-1
  • Men’s Basketball vs University of West of Scotland – A very exciting 69-67 win against the team top of the table!

Our live – stream service owes a lot of gratitude to our Media Team Volunteers, Theo, Lauren & Yixu. They have all been a massive help and asset to the team in set up, camera operating and packing down as well as the support from Sports Union staff who have supported our project throughout!

Club of the Week

With so many clubs having successful weekly fixtures/races/ fights et al, we felt it was appropriate to offer an opportunity for some of our clubs to have additional recognition. Weekly we have showcased a different club for successful performances, charity work, good sportsmanship, and increased participation. Club members can sign their clubs up through our link tree form on our Instagram handle or through a link on our stories shared three times weekly. In recent weeks it has proven challenging to select a club based on their detailed applications, so if your club has been unsuccessful so far, please do keep your applications coming!

So far, we have awarded club of the week to the following clubs:

  • Kickboxing – Hosted an Intraclub competition with majority of attendees being first timers!
  • Touch Rugby – Visited Stirling for Wallace Cup fielding three teams for first time in club history!
  • Women’s Football – 21 goals scored across their 3 teams in action with many new members scoring
  • Netball – Climbed to 1st and 2nd in their BUCS 1A league
  • Sailing – Placed 3rd in BUCS Women’s Fleet Racing Champs & 1st and 2nd in Scottish Student Women’s Champs.
  • Fencing – Both men’s and women’s placing in top 3 in BUCS league table.

Podcast

This semester we have had two podcast episodes released with a third coming up soon!

Episode 1: Joining a Sports Club at Edinburgh

Hosted by myself I had the pleasure of Claire Baker and Anna Rothig as guests. This short snappy episode gave new students an insight to sport at Edinburgh!

Episode 2: Sport at Edinburgh with Team Scotland Student Athletes.

Birmingham 2022 Team Scotland athletes Kirsty Marsh & Archie Goodburn share their Commonwealth Games experiences, future sporting plans and ambitions. It was great to discover how they transfer their skills in elite performance to their studies here at Edinburgh, plus learning the daily sacrifices they both make daily to combine not just studies, but club committee work too.

Photography

Each week our Media photographers have been working hard photographing as many club events and fixtures as possible. Whether that is club training, match day’s or charity work plenty of photography has been taking place. If your club has event that you wish to have photographers for, please send me and email and I will strive to provide a photographer from my team. If nobody is available clubs are able to borrow a camera from the Sports Union Office subject to availability.

We aim to showcase some shots from your clubs events weekly through social media and we now have a Flickr account where each club has their own photo album. Check it out here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196112759@N06

Rainbow Laces

We were delighted to see a sea of colour supporting the LGBTIQ+ community on Rainbow Laces Day on the 26th of October. Throughout the day we had our Vice President Inclusion Philine Rouwers collecting quotes and videos from clubs explaining how important it is to be an LGBTIQ+ ally at all times helping make their sport and society as a whole more inclusive and welcoming no matter who you are or where you come from. We would like to encourage all of our clubs to continue their support for the LGBTIQ+ community all year round.

Looking Ahead

As we near the end of semsester one, we still have plenty of sporting action here at Edinburgh!

Most notably our weekly live streaming focus fixtures:?

  • Netball vs Loughborough 23rd November - 3rd Place Edinburgh face a tough visit of 2nd place Loughborough.
  • Men's & Women's Volleyball vs Northumbria 30th November - A double header fixture held at Pleasance
  • Women's Rugby vs Durham 7th December  - A key fixture where EULRFC look to maintain their lead at BUCS Women's National League.

Intramural All Stars- 18th of January - Stay tuned for further updates on our planned media coverage

Sports Ball - 26th of January - Sports Ball - Stay hyped and look forward to seeing our Sports Ball Video - you may even see yourself in it!

As ever please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or ideas that your club is looking to gain additional publicity from!

Stay keen, stay green & keep up the good sportsmanship!

Telfer :)
